ALERT: High Lead Levels in School Drinking Water May Prompt Screenings

In some areas where our members who are your patients live, school drinking water supplies have been found to have high levels of lead. In these areas, you may see an influx of parents asking about lead blood tests for their children.

We’d like to remind you that the Pennsylvania Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) covers lead blood testing with no out-of-pocket costs to CHIP members and their families. You can be reimbursed for lead blood tests with procedure code 83655.

We’d also like to remind you that CHIP requires network physicians to perform lead blood tests for CHIP patients before they turn two years of age, and that CHIP covers these screenings.

Special eBulletin dated Nov. 9. 2018 has more information about lead blood tests for CHIP patients.
